about

Italian Gas

Italian Gas was the name of the band I sang with when I was a teenager in Cambridge, UK. These recordings date from 1986-87. Italian Gas could be viewed as a super-group for the post-punk Cambridge music scene! We had Andrew Bor on drums, formerly of The Users, one of the earliest and very best UK punk bands. We had Gavin Langford (Vanishing Point) on bass and my brother Julian Walker (The Exhibition) on guitar. The musical direction was somewhat altered by the fact that I was deeply in love with electro, hip hop and rap. (Between the break-up of the Smiths and the start of Madchester, the UK indie guitar scene was in the doldrums). We played a few gigs, including a Battle of the Bands competition at the Cambridge Corn Exchange and a showcase for Food Records in Plaistow, London. Among the countless groups on parade, I remember one called GREED all wearing very expensive-looking jumpsuits with GREED written in huge letters down the sides. Well, it was the 1980s.
